Holdin' It's Value

There are some things on the market that do not hold their value from year to year such as any i product, last year's parachute skirt, or even last season's blockbuster movie.
But then I have always been drawn to the classics and they do hold on to value such as an English-made tweed skirt, an author-signed book, or the Civia Loring.

This particular Civa model is being reinvented in 2012 without many of the stylish accessories one receives with the 2011 model such as; the bamboo fender set, the rear rack with bamboo inset, leather grips, and a Brook's leather saddle. Breeze, Clouds, Steel

Picture a warm sunny day. There is a slight breeze. The temperature is a mellow

70 degrees.

Up in the sky a few puffy clouds are blowing around. I don't usually visualize shapes or objects in clouds. But they do whisk me away and make me dreamy. I imagine the speed with which I could get to other places if only I could ride that cloud. Soma Fabrications has created my cloud.

They also gave it a name; Stanyan.

Ethan has been busy designing custom light systems this month and I just adore the way the pictured system works.

Abici 3-speed with a generator light system

Our clever neighbor brought in her Abici for a new light system and together we decided to find a lighting system that is convenient and matches the sleek and classic Abici frame.
The choices she made are:
- a front Dynamo Shimano hub to generate both the rear and front light in a matte silver finish
- the front head lamp is halogen instead of LED because of the styling of the lamp. The yellowish glow of the halogen bulbs are easier on the eyes and surely plenty bright for city cycling.
- the rear lamp attaches to the fender for another classic look with a little protective bracket around it.
A nice feature when you lock your bicycle in city bicycle racks.
This particular lighting system works in all weather conditions, matches the bicycle, is theft-proof, and super bright.

Generator light systems start at $66 for the standard set up with a side-wall generator.
A custom system, as pictured on the Abici, entail building a new front wheel, purchasing a new hub as well as the light system itself and can cost about $300 or more. What does Winter commuting mean? For most of us it means riding in darkness. But it doesn't have to be unsafe, unfun, or unlit. Now is a great time for a quick primer on generator lighting systems.

Generator lights are the green way to light the night on your bike. Taking very little of your pedaling energy, generators convert your bean power into electricity, turning your perilous night ride into a safe journey (hopefully ending with hot chocolate).
There are generators powered by:
a tire sidewall
a bottom bracket
a font hub.
Hub generated light systems are typically viewed as the better option because they:
are quiet
do not drag
operate in all weather conditions.
The lights themselves are available in:
LED or halogen bulbs
with or without built in reflectors
with or without a standlight feature which keeps the light on while you stop
different beam patterns
different levels of brightness
all depending on your style of riding.

I have been reading escapism the 44 Scotland Street series by Alexander McCall Smith. These books follow a fictional cast of characters, all of whom reside in Edinburgh, including a charming artist who has a gift for composing poetry. Now what a beautiful way to communicate, so I persuaded Ethan to write one for us:

Changing of the Seasons:
Riding. Enjoying the sun's warmth.
Although warm it is not. The late Fall wind bites leaving my face chapped and hands cracked. Knickers and a thick wool sweater keep me comfy. Thoughts of hot tea fill my mind. Home. I soften my fingers, stiff from the cold, over the flame as my water heats. I opt for something to fortify. Not ready to settle in for Winter. I hold my hot cuppa and recollect my rides of the recent summer. Is that a snowflake floating past my window? I better stock my tea shelf. And maybe a new Pugsley for my stable.

Back from Holiday

Ethan had an awesome trip to the Alps this last September but since he has an aversion to cameras and was trying to keep up with his mates the entire week he did not bring back any photos only memories.

My husband, being the jealous type said, "let us take a trip this Fall too." Actually we usually take a holiday together in the fall and since last year we only made it Las Vegas I felt like we should celebrate out 15th anniversary in style. We packed up our bicycles for Italy!

Now that Ethan and I have both enjoyed our separate adventures we are back in the shop happily serving our little corner of Colorado already planning for our bicycle trips in 2012.

Bicycle shopping is fun in Denver. With a bicycle shop in every quadrant of the city and each one exhibiting what they deem to be the best that money can buy our urbanistically styled store front stands out from the pack. I often ask "shall we retrofit your old steel framed bicycle?" The 1980's era 10-speed is at times the best city bike out there except that; it may need it's hubs overhauled, the tires might be dry rotted, the spokes are seized in the rims, or maybe it's missing a pedal because the crank is stripped... all problems that we address in our shop every day. So then comes the inevitable question is it worth it?
Usually yes sometimes no. I ask will a new bicycle suit your 2011 needs better? Indeed it seems we are reaching the golden age of city bicycles now. There are high performance bicycles, there are stylish numbers, there are light and there are not so light available and yet sometimes custom is the best option. Should One Internalize?

So many of our City Styled bicycles feature internally geared hubs here at Urbanistic Tea & Bike Shop that once in a while I have to stand back and ask is the internal hub the best solution for all? Not to be a dictionary but an internally geared hub typically ranges from 3-speed to 8-speed although 9 or even 11-speed hubs are infrequently available also. With an internally geared hub the bicyclist simply shifts gears with a twist of the wrist or a flick of the thumb without worrying about engaging a derailleur system. It's clean, simple, and automatic.
Convenience Factors:
down shift while at a complete stop
no derailleur adjustments
cleanliness
But nothing is perfect, the internally geared hubs may limit the rider according to the gear ratio. A properly adjusted drivetrain allows a rider far more gears which may allow the bicyclist to climb greater distances than a simple 3-speed hub. And then the weight of the hub may be intimidating to some. Although I believe that a modestly heavy bicycle is perfectly acceptable as I much rather have fenders, lights, a kickstand, rack, lock... than a 20lb useless city bicycle.

So the answer to my question is that it depends. How the rider will be using their new bicycle? I changed my cargo bicycle from a 7-speed Shimano hub to a 2+7 drivetrain. My cargo bicycle is often weighed down and taken on long 20-40 mile hilly bicycle rides so the greater gear ratio made sense for this bicycle.

The pictured Civia with a 9-speed cassette is responsive, light, and perfectly geared for short to mid distance rides. The purchaser may choose to add a few features such as fenders, cargo rack, and kickstand and it's utility will be doubled hopefully adding to the frequency that the bicycle will be ridden.

Monday is our day off to do chores, ride bike, and catch up so off I go.

Addedum: I rode out to Chatfield/Waterton Canyon yesterday and only used 6 gears! Now Ethan just adjusted my derailleurs so they were responsive and probably a bit quicker than an internally geared hub but my ride would have been just as comfortable with an 7 or 8-speed hub.

I love that our little shop sees so many classic bicycles come in for I am the one that owns Schwinn bicycles from the 1960's and '70's and I have two English Raleighs dating 1972-1974. I clearly enjoy my classic bicycles, they are what I pull out when I am riding through the city for fun or social engagements. But in order to enjoy the aesthetic of these bicycles there are certain repairs that have been made and maintained over the years. My bicycles are clean, have pumped up tires, and are usually sporting a bell and/or light system. Invariably when I park one of my classic bicycles at a rack downtown I receive compliments and sometimes stories of other bicycles that used to be ridden with joy.
What fun is it to ride any kind of bicycle with worn out tires and dried brake pads.
Kinked cable housing leads to inefficient braking, out of true wheels leads to unsteadiness ...

I suppose my plea today is to maintain your old bicycle! We have an experienced bicycle mechanic who can fix your classic bicycle woes with respect.
Costs may include: new tires/tubes/rimstrip
new brake pads
possibly cables/housing
labor
but in the end you receive a bicycle that is safe and fun to ride.

Vacation Store Hours

Dreams give me purpose.
Often dreams have fallen flat but then other dreams have opened into realities I did not foresee.

Ethan's dream of opening his own bicycle shop has evolved over the course of many years and now it is time for a quick reprieve from one dream to the next. The dream of being able to ride his bicycle for a week or two in a beautiful, bicycle friendly environment. His only concerns will be find lodging at the end of day in order to map out the route for the next day of riding.
While Ethan is chasing his dream for two weeks I will be running the Tea & Bike shop by myself. I am not a bicycle mechanic so I will have to schedule bicycle maintenance for when Ethan returns from his vacation later this month. Although flat repairs will be completed by the end of each day.

Wonderful teas and exciting bicycle accessories are arriving weekly this Autumn, come by for a look when you are in the Highland Square area. We so appreciate the community support we have received this year and try to honor every customer as you enter our store.

Ethan and I have a corporate meeting this morning at 7AM. Agenda: fix flat repairs, build a few new bicycles for the sales floor, stock loose leaf teas, check in inventory that arrived this week (including Zimbale canvas saddle bags), and stock shelves all before opening time at 9 AM. We won't get it all finished but then there is always Sunday morning.

I've been reading "The Lost Cyclist"by David V. Herlihy, a historical account of cycle touring in the 1890's. The book is a bit lengthy with great detail given to the personalities of these young cyclists who took off around the world on the newly developed Safety Bicycles. I, being a history buff, have been enjoying the read quite a bit.

Inspired by the carefree characters I have been reading about I decided to take off for Boulder this afternoon on my xtracycle. I had completed several items from my Monday to-do list and was ready to find a particular shoe shop I have heard about owned by two sisters on Pearl Street in Boulder. My plan was to load up my xtracycle with shoe boxes.

All afternoon I saw horses, ponies and goats. Birds and butterflies circled me on country roads and I was inspired by the vistas from Standley Lake. I was a bit disappointed by the heavy auto traffic as human development has encroached on the open prairies between Denver and Boulder. But there were fluffy clouds, sun, and breezes to enjoy.

I found my destination, and they had just closed! My journey took me longer than I had anticipated. Having not ridden for two weeks one couldn't be surprised by my pace. Deciding that dusk would descend before I could make it home I caught the RTD back to downtown Denver.

Things I learned about Riding from Denver to Boulder:

1) Map your ride to Boulder carefully, did it. For some unknown reason the local governments haven't built a bike path from Denver to Boulder so one must zig zag through the greater suburbs of Arvada, Westminster, etc.

2) Drink Water, did it.

3) Bring Snacks, forgot. Even if you aren't hungry you should have little snacks every hour or so. I got a whopper of a headache from not eating.

4) Put Sunscreen on your ears, ouch.

5) have $5 in your bag, did it, just in case you have to catch the bus back to Denver.

Next week I will leave before 3PM!

I went on a bike ride today. Everyone was busy or working so I pulled out my Nishiki and took off towards Lookout Mountain by myself. That's alright, I haven't bonded with my old Japanese touring bike a whole lot since I purchased my Surly Cross Check.
My Nishiki and I go way back. After 8 years of marriage, my husband and I planned our first bike trip in Europe. We have friends in Western Germany and would stay with them then ride a week or two by ourselves in Alsace, France. My only road bike at the time was a 1973 Grand Prix, Raleigh which wasn't the best for the hilly ascents we were planning on. My clever father-in-law gave me his lightly used Nishiki. My brother then dolled up this 20 year old steel bike with Nitto mustache bars, a Brook's leather saddle, and an English tweed handlebar bag. Off we went, this was back when select European airlines would allow one a complete bicycle as a check-in item without extra fees.

We arrived at the Frankfurt airport and I was astounded to observe several travelers retrieving their bicycles from the luggage area, make a few adjustments, mount their bicycles, and ride away out the airport onto their destination. My eyes were opened to a whole new way of travel.
My Nishiki served me well that trip; up and down hills, through fairy tale villages, on dirt trails through dense forests, and on manicured bike paths meandering through this enchanted piece of Europe.

My Nishiki is now for sale and will serve another rider on more joyous journeys.

Preparing for Bicycle Touring or just getting more comfortable on the saddle:
1) Consider leather; a proper Brook's leather saddle will conform to your anatomy offering a bit of flex and plenty of comfort in the long run.
2) Handlebar position, I like to look at the scenery so often opt for mustache bars or swept back bars in order to ensure multiple hand positions all in a slightly upright position.
3) Core muscle group, engage your belly muscles to hold your body in a proper position without slouching. Pilates - sit-ups - crunches or whichever routine you prefer for stronger abdominals will help your cycling comfort.
4) Platform pedals, I like moving my feet around on long rides and absolutely hate having my feet locked into 1 position.
5) Time in the saddle, the more you ride the easier it is. If you haven't been riding for awhile give yourself two weeks to find your legs again.

Goodbye April, Hello Spring

I'm looking out the window as some unwanted snowflakes are dropping from the sky. It always seems to be the weekend when the weather takes a dive. Everyone keeps making warm weather plans only to have them dashed by chilly temps. Maybe next weekend it will be warm enough for a pleasant bicycle date.

I am as excited about summer as you are, working in a bike shop is great. Even on those chilly days customers and friends come in and tell me of their plans to ride this summer.
Some people want to begin commuting to work.
Yippee!
Some want to go camping with their new bike.
Hot diggety!
Some want to meet up with friends and tour the city.
Super!

Everyone gets excited when they purchase a new bike or resurrect that old nag from the garage rafters. In owning a bike shop I experience that excitement everyday through you. It never gets old it never gets redundant. Most people aren't sure of what type or style of bicycle to buy to suit their needs properly. Come in and tell me your plans and desires. I'll point you to the bike that will fulfill those wants beyond your expectations. I will always grin when I sell a bicycle to a customer and then watch my new friend ride down the street. When you come into my shop and ride away happy, when you return and tell me of all of your new adventures I smile and know that I will be working in a bicycle shop for as long as I possible can.
Despite the snow Spring is here. May flowers are peeping through their Winter cover. Bring in that old nag stored in the rafters or buy a shiny new ride. As for my Summer plans, I plan to keep you all riding happily and maybe go on a bicycle date or two. Yahoo!

Maybe It's Time for a New Steed in Your Stable

Spring Showers bring Spring Bicycling

It feels like spring is ready to burst out. Early flower bulbs are popping up out of the ground. Color is returning to the city. I am already looking at my pants with a pair of scissors and an evil twinkle in my eye. Tell me what's better than a warm night riding in cutoffs and a t-shirt?

But before that happens we need to wash the mag chloride off our bikes (our helmets too, I got splashed!) and get them running as sweetly as Spring flowers smell. If your bike needs some extra love I'm your man. I haven't had a girlfriend all winter so I have more than enough love in me for everyone. Is your chain squeeky? brake pads warn? cables dragging? Bring your ride in soon. I'll turn that hag into the hot mama or papa of your dreams. Yeah I do get a little carried away sometimes but I am truly excited that a new cycling season is arriving and I want you all to enjoy it as much as me. Which means a properly tuned bicycle rolling with the love and care I have imparted just for you.

All Aboard the Big Dummy

I wish I could make everybody love riding bike. To make everyone realize how super bicycles are. Transportation, fitness, recreation, fun, speed, big loads, light loads, touring, camping, vacation, exploration, social events, inexpensive, racing, stress relief. Bicycles embody all of these actions and ideas and much more.
I fell in love with bicycles as a child living in rural Indiana. I saw Amish men riding to work every day with their lunch pail strapped onto their rear racks. The sight of their spokes reflecting brilliant beams of sunlight will never be forgotten. My uncle once rode the breadth of the U.S. on his bicycle. A dream I have never let go of. Growing up I saw first hand how bicycles are a viable means of transportation. Being the mechanical gear head that I am I have owned a few cars over the years. However they were never my daily transportation.

I have two Kerry Blues in tow now.

Several years ago I needed a way to carry my dog with me on my bicycle. I bought an xtracycle. My world began to change. I realized you can easily haul oversized and heavy loads with a bicycle. Two weeks worth of groceries? that's nothing. A month's worth of laundry? Ha! How about a motorized sewer line auger? What about a several 2x4's and a few sheets of sheetrock? A claw foot tub? A used car engine and transmission? An extension ladder? A 40 gallon water heater? Yes, I have carried all of these things and much more with my xtracycle and cargo trailer.
A bicycle is the epitome of freedom. We need to instill this passion and key to freedom and longevity into our children. Young people see the world in black and white. Setting a good example through actions and words has a lifelong effect. One customer of mine happily bought a special bicycle to take her children to school. Her husband races bicycles on the weekend and commutes by bike during the week. As their children grow and mature they modify their fleet of bicycles to accommodate their changing needs. They are an excellent example of how the American lifestyle can be modified to make the mighty bicycle a focal point in our daily living. Their children are undoubtably going to grow up enjoying bicycles and will continue to ride into old age. As will I.

Dreaming in Italian

Have you ever wished you were Italian? That's okay, me neither until I rode an Abici Bicycle. When I ride the Abici I feel incredibly stylish. For a few miles my T-shirt and Dickies shorts turn into a hand tailored suit. My van sneakers become finely crafted leather loafers. My hair is moussed and I smell of expensive cologne. I suddenly see beautiful dark haired Italian women all around me. I realize it's the mid 1950's. There are small Fiats squirting about the narrow streets. WAKE UP FOOl! I'm actually riding up 17th Street with an RTD two feet to my right and a belching delivery van to my left. Although there is a gorgeous woman standing on the corner, I swiftly pass the frowning driver in the RTD bus and smile at the girl. She notices me and smiles back. I'm having too much fun to stop. I continue on hoping my ride will never end.

Welcome Home to a Cuppa Tea

After 12 years of selling tea leaf I have observed nameless trends come and go. A re-occuring question that I always enjoy entertaining is "what is oolong?" Oolong by definition is a partially oxidized tea leaf and then I walk with my customer to the oolong shelves study the different tea leaf styles that represent oolong. We read the names on the jars which paint pictures of ancient tales in which the wise and strong fortified by tea prevail against injustice in the end; Iron Goddess of Mercy, Dragon Balls, Magnolia Blossom...
Oolong leaves are large leaves that are hand-plucked and undergo multi-stepped manufacturing processes that can take over 40 hours to complete. As a result oolongs range greatly in flavor. They can be highly oxidized producing a mellow and toasty flavor or they can be lightly oxidized with a greener flavor of even flowery aroma.
As one is shopping for oolong observe the leaf style, oolongs are either rolled or twisted. Observe if a bit of the tea tree twig is still attached to the tea leaf proving that the leaf was hand plucked and respectfully processed. Maybe your tea merchant will even be willing to brew a sample cup for you so you can truly observe the leaf unfurl and release it's true aroma.
WuYi Oolong

The WuYi Mountains in Fujian, China were home to many Buddhist and Taoist religious communities. The microclimate of the WuYi mountains is unique, the soil is sandy and the remote mountain range is often blanketed with mist. The tea bush cultivars native to the region were favorable to oolong production and the various religious orders of the region worked to perfect the art of tea manufacturing. Over the centuries the regional tea producers have carefully cloned prized tea tree bushes we now enjoy their efforts. This is the region that became known for "monkey picked" tea, a falsehood perpetuated by tea merchants. The WuYi oolong we represent is hand picked, rich and highly oxidized. It is one of the few oolongs that I enjoy after dessert which are prevalent this month aren't they.

Winter is Knocking at the Door

The snow is finally here (or coming soon). Of course I was out riding in it just like I do every year. I like riding in the Winter. It takes more thought and planning. Often the morning is gorgeous but evening comes and the weather is putrid. No more just throwing on a T-shirt and enjoying a comfortable ride. Now I add a pair or gloves to my shorts and T-shirt ensemble. I start thinking about a jacket when the temp dips into the low 30's. It's chilly when I first start out but then my internal furnace heats up and I am comfortable. The cold temperatures aren't great it's the snow I look forward to.
I love riding through virgin snow first thing in the morning, later bouncing down the same streets after all the cars packed the snow into ice. I actually enjoy the challenge of riding on ice. Many times I have watched cars slide off the road or through intersections hitting curbs, trees, signs and anything else in their path while I ride by at full steam in complete control. I arrive at my destination exhilarated pumped up on adrenalin. Believe it or not I am often faster riding on bad streets in the winter than I am riding the same route in the summer.
There are 3 keys that make my bike so terrific on snow and ice. Having a long tail bike like my Big Dummy adds a tremendous amount of stability. Combined with a set of Nokian studded snow tires my bike handles better than anything else I have ever ridden. The final ingredient is my Rohloff Speedhub. The gears on a derailleur-equipped bicycle get clogged a few blocks in snow and slush skipping and unable to shift. Derailleurs are pitiful on bad streets. Internal geared hubs rule the Winter. There are internally geared hubs made by Shimano, SRAM, Sturmey-Archer and others. It's the Rohloff that is king among them all. It is the best hub available for commuting, touring, and mountain use. Shifting is cable actuated for most hubs while Rohloff's indexing is inside the hub so your shifting never needs adjustment. It is an amazing piece of engineering, each hub is virtually hand made. They are totally bombproof and reliable.
I blew up two Shimano hubs in as many years I have been riding my Rohloff, 7 years without any problems whatsoever. I frequently haul very heavy loads with my bicycle. Shifting under load may not be recommended but the Rohloff takes it in stride. I am on my fourth rim with the same hub. Originally mounted on a Bianchi Milano with an xtracycle I wore out and broke the xtracycle. I have crashed, banged, and generally abused this hub as hard as I can and it never falters. Rain, snow, ice, and even sun I have ridden this hub virtually everyday.
With my Big Dummy, Nokian tires, and Rohloff hub I am looking forward to another Winter demonstrating to all the car drivers that bicycles rule the bad streets.

Denver is not a big city. Denver is a city in miniature. At one time or another I will run into everyone I have ever known. I also run into people who know me although we have never met because I ride my bike everywhere, every day, people recognize me. I stop in at the morning bakery and one of the cooks says "Wow you ride everywhere, I saw you at Hampden and Logan Monday, you rock!"
I'm out walking my dogs in the evening when a man yells out "Hey I just say you and your dogs on Facebook, that's so cool." I run into a coffee shop and bump into a girl I haven't seen in two years. "Holy smokies, hi Carrie!" (I still have a crush on her.)
Every neighborhood I go to it happens. How many cities can you ride to every corner of the city and see someone you know? It happens more to me since I ride everywhere I go, I'm visible. I also own a bike shop, half the bikes I see riding around I worked on. I put new tires on that one, I changed out the handlebars on another, tune-up and new cables on that one, yeah I sold him or her that Brooks saddle, it's great. Denver is a wonderful city to ride in, everyone needs to ride more. We will make Denver the biggest, happiest, friendliest neighborhood in the country. Not a city in miniature, a community to be proud of. So when you see me riding by, and you will, yell and wave. My dogs might just give you an excited woof.

Cold Season

Michelle brought back a nice whopper of a cold from Las Vegas and kindly gave it to me las week. Monday, my first day off in seven months, and I was sick as a dog. It's okay. We all get sick once in a while. Well I was riding home yesterday after work the cold was in my chest and I could barely breathe, I was a little light headed from the lack of oxygen. Most people when they feel this bad hitch a ride from a friend or take the bus. But no, I'm stubborn, I ride bike. So while waiting for the light at Speer and Federal I survey my surroundings. Everyone in their cars looked as miserable as I felt. My gaze turned upward and I see a beautiful sky. A soft breeze kissed my face, serenity was mine. The light changed I coughed and jumped on my pedals taking my lane down Speer. Even though I was about to pass out I was glad to be on two wheels in the open feeling the world around me.

An Interesting Statistic

Recently I heard a statistic that got me rather excited. New car sales are the lowest they have been in eighteen years. I know that it is an indicator of the state of our economy. I also know that many people for generations have made their living off of the new car industry. Obviously now is the time for change. The new car industry needs to shrink substantially. The type of change I am suggesting will be hard for everyone. Major change always is. But out of this change opportunity will arise. The purchase of a new vehicle is not only unnecessary but also, in my opinion, irresponsible. There are millions of cars already on the road. The amount of resources dumped into the production of a new automobile is terrible. By maintaining, repairing, and restoring the cars currently on the road we can save our resources for things that we actually need. We need to remove the idea from our national psyche that a new car is a good thing, a status symbol, something that we should all strive for and be proud of. To me it should be the opposite. You should be embarrassed for not logically thinking through the decision to purchase a new vehicle.
I hope the trend continues and new car sales stay on the decline. It is not enough to just reduce the number of new cars manufactured. We also need to reduce the number of miles driven in our cars. For people living in the city or even a small town driving is largely unnecessary. Even if you are of just moderately good health riding a bicycle is the best form of quick and efficient transportation. Yes in the summer you are going to sweat, in the winter you have to wear a hat and gloves, and if you get a little damp when it rains you are not going to melt. Here is a goal for everyone. Try to put more miles on your bike per year than your car. Start a contest with your neighbors to see who can go the longest without driving. Cut your household down to just one car. Be proud of your old car, maintain it to keep it running clean and then don't drive it. It will be yours forever. By reducing your dependency of driving I believe you will also think about other ways of reducing your environmental footprint. Long live mother earth.

An English Beauty

I'm in love. She's wonderful. Her name is Pashley. She is pure British, old fashioned, steady, a joy to ride, shiny and black with huge 28" wheels. As soon as I mounted her for the first time I knew in my heart that we belong together. I first took her up the street to get comfortable with her and get a feel for the Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub and drum brakes. That evening I flicked on her generator powered headlight and took her home with me. Once there I parked her in my living room where I could admire her Brooks leather saddle and useful luggage rack. In the morning, bright and early, I wheeled her down the alley and headed back to work. When I am on her I float above the world around me. I'm special with her, Sovereign.

Pashley and I are going for a spin

At Urbanistic we have added some great new urban bikes to our offerings. One of the new lines of bikes for us is Pashley and the first model we received was the Sovereign. Still made across the pond in lovely old England this bicycle is special. The overall feel of the bike is very smooth and comfortable. Nothing else can duplicate the feel of 28" wheels. They're great! The comfortable seating position and relaxed frame geometry doesn't take away from the Sovereign's ability to be ridden at a spritely pace up and down hills. Remember this bike was originally designed to be ridden through the English countryside and yes they do have hills there. It is a heavy bicycle but once at speed along with 5 gears it isn't as noticeable as you would think. It is an experience riding a Pashley. An experience that should not be missed.

Style vs Function (nah, both!)

Most traditional bike shops are well versed in road bikes and mountain bikes. They are knowledgeable and able to assist you in your selection of that style of bicycle. When it comes to transportation and urban bicycles the traditional American bike shop is lost. Most of the owners of these shops and their staff have not ridden extensively in the city. They don't know which bikes are best for the city, they don't know what accessories are required and they don't know what really works. They still see bicycles as a recreational and fitness item but not as a practical daily mode of transportation. Unfortunately I see people almost every day that just bought a new bike for urban use and it is the totally wrong bike for them. Usually it is either a skinny tire road bike or a fat tire mountain bike, WRONG! Many of the new city bikes traditional bicycle shops are selling are styled nicely but fall short on actual comfort, and functionality.

Recently I had a customer buy a bicycle at another shop after test riding one of my bikes. Her plan was to start commuting downtown regularly. My bike fit her and her needs perfectly and she liked it but it didn't have the "look" she wanted. I have yet to see her ride to work My sister and I have been riding in the city for a combined 50 plus years. It is our passion and our lifestyle. We have ridden every kind of bicycle. We know what you need for your commute and why. We know what works and what doesn't. As a bonus we can make your urban ride stylish too. Ethan.

Nobody Likes Disappointment

Nobody likes disappointment. Every time I see a bike being ridden with squeaks and rattles I am disappointed. I am disappointed way too often. My own bicycles never disappoint me. They never break and let me down. They always run smoothly and quietly That is the way a bicycle should be.
At the beginning of Spring I suggested to a friend that she take her bike to her local bike shop and get a tune-up. That way it would be ready for Summer without any worries. She told me that she has never had her bike serviced and I would be upset if I saw it. She didn't take it in. I was at loss. Later my friend told me she was moving to Denver and asked if I would work on her bike, "of course I will," I was happy that she wanted to get her bike in order. After her move I asked her to bring her bike in to the shop. She never did. For me to have a good friend who won't let me service her bicycle is an acute disappointment.
I have an urban bike shop. We service all kinds of bicycles but mostly bikes used consistently for commuting and city riding. It can be difficult because there is a large number of people who think a city bike is not a bike worth putting money into. Many people are also of the mindset that if you buy a used bike for cheap it is not worth putting any more money into it. An Urban bike needs to be safe, tough, and reliable. It doesn't have to be expensive. I have always had to budget for my bicycles. I rode a bike for years that I purchased at Goodwill for $5. I stripped it to the frame and rebuilt it for $400 with new and good used parts. My next bike was free after I wrestled it from the bottom of a junk pile. I rebuilt that one for $300. Those two bikes looked good and rode great and I was proud of them My current heavy hauler is a Surly big Dummy. It's worth over $4000. I built and rebuilt this bike over several years. I could never afford to build this bike all at once.

My current project is a '70's Peugeot 10-speed. It was given to me as a frame and fork (Thanks Paul!) Again I will soon be rebuilding it with new and good used parts including campy tigo hubs. It will run better than new. If a bicycle gets professionally serviced and worn parts replaced it will last forever and never disappoint. It won't hit your budget too hard it will make you feel good. Every time an automobile driver that sees you smiling on your bike you're making a positive impact. Every time I see one of my customers riding through the neighborhood without noise without pollution I feel good. You're the ones that make my happy.

Fixie Builds

Biking has been a constant in my lifestyle since my father bought me my first bike at age 4, I would be gone for hours riding bike and exploring the countryside of northern Indiana with my friend Loreen, later I was one of 3 people who rode bike to high school in Goshen Ind. on a regular basis. When my family moved to Denver all of our bicycles were stolen the first night in the city. I still can feel the dull emptiness in the pit of my stomach when my family woke up to the loss of our bicycles. You see, my parents had saved for a year in order to buy new bicycles for the whole family. But I worked and I saved and bought myself another bicycle, buying a car didn't even enter my mind. My first boyfriend and I lived in central Denver and rode bicycles everywhere partly due to economics but mostly due to the pure fun and satisfaction of riding bike.
We naturally tend to categorize people into groups. Maybe so we can feel comfortable with the other party or even find a connection with them. But there is really no need to categorize cyclists.

Some ride fixed no brakes, some ride carbon, some ride steel, some ride hardtail, some ride full suspension. But you know what, as long as we ride we are all part of the cycling community. Probably the most fun, sane, healthy, and sometimes silliest group of people you will come across!

I try to always be compassionate towards others. To realize that people often have problems that are not apparent. Sometimes physical sometimes mental. I know that a single kind word or act can change not only a person's day but their life. A little understanding can have a profound effect. I have had this happen to me more than once. Usually the person helping me has no idea that they just changed my life forever, no idea of what I have been going through and struggling with.

I have multiple sclerosis. I was diagnosed 5 years ago when I was 32. I had symptoms for about a year and a half before that. On a daily basis I live with fatigue, depression, numbness and tingling in my hands and feet, some loss of function in my hands, some minor tightness in my abdominal muscles, and a little bit of a problem with word and name recollection. These are ongoing symptoms also have a long list of other symptoms that come and go. My disease is invisible to most people. That could change literally any minute. I have a very unpredictable life, I am still happy. I still try to maintain a positive outlook. I know that my actions are important. I try to be thoughtful in everything I do. Be kind, be caring, be understanding, be empathetic, be compassionate. I have tried to be these things everyday my whole life. simple aspirations I know but it is these actions that have thought me the most and made me emotionally strong and resilient. Physically I am watching my gradual decline. MS never stops attacking, it is the fatigue that has begun to affect my quality of life. I no longer have the energy to do so many of the things I love. I make plans but I'm unable to follow through. I am having to redefine what it is I like about life. What helps and makes everything easier is when people are nice and compassionate.

Week End Fun

I was riding back to on Friday evening (yeah, I know, get a life 4 months and counting without a day off!). I was observing people in their cars, I noticed there were multiple passengers in most of them quite different than morning rush hour. This is what I don't understand, most people don't necessarily enjoy driving but nearly everyone enjoys riding bike. If you are going out for an evening of fun why employ such a depressing form of transportation.

You're going out to have fun you're not on a tight schedule why not make everything you do a pleasurable experience? Riding bike is relaxing and exhilarating at the same time. For me it is the perfect beginning and end to a fun night out.

Another Day Another Ride

I was riding home from work at about 5:30. It was going fairly smooth, for awhile I was keeping pace with a couple of fixie riders having fun dodging cars. I turned off and was riding one of the dreaded bike lanes. I am never surprised by a stupid, inattentive, motor vehicle operators. So a motorist in a subaru next to me makes an abrupt illegal turn right into my path. I lock the rear wheel skid sideways and turn the corner simultaneously with this pukemobile. Over the screeching of my tire I could hear a pedestrian screaming as she saw the scene unfold. I circle the offending car and look at the driver. She is smiling at me inside of her air-con cocoon. I shake my head and ride past the pedestrian who screamed. She is telling the person accompanying her that, that horrible car isn't even supposed to turn there and drive down that street. These type of events happen nearly every time I ride.

even fixies need bike maintenance

So many people, cyclists included, see a bicycle bombing through traffic, running lights, weaving between cars and they think these cyclists are dangerous and are taking chances. I have been hit many times by motorists, never once was I doing something "dangerous and illegal." Every time it was a driver unconcerned about their own operation of a 3000 lb killing machine. It is easy for a cyclist riding through the city to see it as doing battle. I feel a serenity while I am on my bike, even in peak traffic. Sure I could have kicked her door in and broken off her mirror. If I had done that who would have won the battle? She would have. By losing my temper I would have also lost the peaceful happiness of my ride. I feel this is far more important than retaliation. Ride Happy.

A Good Reason to Ride

SE singe speed bikes are great city bikes & reasonably priced

I ride bike everyday. I ride because I love bicycles, I love the feeling of freedom, I love the control, I can ride and let my mind drift and feel my problems melt away. My bicycle can take me anywhere I want to go. It has always been my transportation. It has also been my recreation and the core of my fitness. Although, it is the places my bicycle can take me that is the most important. When I tell people I ride everyday and don't own an operational motor vehicle they see it as a political statement. It is but that is not my reason for riding. No one used to think twice when I rode every day in my teens and twenties. I was just a young man on a bike. Now it is a statement. Everyone knows that now is the time to ease our dependency on cars. I am proud that I have been a bicycle commuter since high school. I am proud to influence others to ride through example.

Most people who begin riding to make a statement soon realize that they continue to ride because it makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and socially. I make a statement every day without words. I make my statement with the quiet whir of my chain through the noisy clogged streets of Denver. It is not the political statement that keeps me on my bicycle. It's love. - Ethan.

The Perfect Townie Bike

Manhattan has to be one of my favorite cities because of it's energy.
Oh sure, bicyclists often wear masks due to the horrific pollution but there are more and more of them on the streets slowly leading to a more civilized community.
And the street fashion is so creative. Well except for the scores of women who still insist on high heels, such a dangerous statement when on a bicycle.
The neighborhood business districts are the best. The mix of old and new, chic and funky, this mix is hard to find anywhere else. I do love to shop in colorfully independent stores.
I last visited NYC in Jan. 2006 with Ethan for a MS event held in Grand Central Station and we had great fun exploring the city for a weekend. Eating as many doughnuts, bagels, and bialys as possible since these food groups are so rare in Denver (have you ever been to the Doughnut Factory in the Lower East Side?). I hope to revisit the city with my bike soon then I won't feel so guilty about the inevitable carb loading.

Chocolate and Addiction

I think I heard on the radio that Mr. Cadbury (founder of Cadbury Chocolate) was an English Quaker and he believed the promotion of chocolate would be good substitute to alcoholic beverages for his fellow parishioners. Well I'm not one to say that one addiction is better than another but I will say that at the Urbanistic Tea and Bike Shop we are much more productive after our daily little bite of chocolate. The Neighborhood Bike Shop

The neighborhood bike shop isn't a new concept at all but everyday people ask me "why did you open a bike shop?" Without sounding flippant I usually answer it's a lifestyle store offering needed services to our community. It strikes me that a neighborhood bicycle shop is so unusual in this age of "bigger is better" that a family-run bicycle store is an oddity.
Why did we have the audacity to open a bicycle shop in our fair city? Well Ethan, the co-owner of our store, has a certain set of skills that he has honed over the course of 19 years. He is a professional bicycle mechanic.
How does one define a professional? A professional bicycle mechanic is a person who has:
natural mechanical tendencies,
spent years apprenticing with experienced mechanics,
desire for the work.
The natural knack for working with mechanical things is a trait people are born with. Of my two brothers you can guess which one was crawling around the house with a screwdriver taking things apart before he could walk or talk. Later he was the kid ditching high school so he could ride his bike and soon started working in bicycle shops. Working with experienced mechanics sharpened his set of skills and gave him structured knowledge of the industry.
All professional bicycle mechanics have their own stories to relate beginning with that natural ability and desire. Although many bicycle co-operatives are opening around the country offering free advice, tools, and so on, one can not discount the services of a professional mechanic who has worked many years in the industry. There are dozens of parts and components on each bicycle and it takes education and experience to be able to tune each piece of the machine so that all of the components work cohesively for the rider.
Many cyclists are willing and able to work on their own machine, a wonderful trait to posses. Just keeping your bicycle properly cleaned, the chain lubed, and tires pumped up will prolong the lifespan of your bicycle. Still, every once in a while it is a good idea to have Ethan (or your local professional mechanic) perform a tune-up or overhaul on your bicycle to prevent serious problems or future frustrations.

And Ethan's desire (for his work)? Well that is his personal story but I can say our goal is to be bicycle dependent rather than car dependent. And this goal is so easily attainable when living in an Urban setting. I certainly believe our neighborhood bicycle shop will inspire many of you to pursue this lifestyle in the name of our community, environment, and sanity.

A Still Life of Comfort

Dian Hong style tea leaf means pure Yunnan Black Tea, it is harvested and processed in the Yunnan Province without being adulterated by tea leaves from outside Yunnan. It is estimated that Yunnan is the birthplace of tea culture in China some 2000 years ago. Tea production is a sacred, social tradition that still thrives in the remote villages of Southwestern China. Currently we have three different Diahn Hong and four different Pu-erhs from Yunnan to choose from at Urbanistic Tea & Bike Shop.

Chinese Breakfast Blend is an organic, fair trade black tea produced by a cooperative of farmers in Yunnan. The tea leaf is hand picked from wild tea trees found growing in their mountainous region, many trees are well over 100 years old. It is a well twisted leaf style, exhibiting many gold tips. The golden tips are the dried delicate tea leaf buds that were carefully selected during harvest. Generally a gold tipped batch of lea leaves is indicative of a high quality batch of tea. Expect a rich, malty cup with just a hint of chocolate.
Yunnan Black Tea, Dian Hong tea production only began in 1939, a full century behind Indian black tea production yet Dian Hong tea ranks as some of the finest in the world. Hailing from the mountainous region of Southern China, far removed from the bureaucracy of Bejing, the tea producers of Yunnan have been able to continue age-old tea traditions without interruption. Our Yunnan black tea is hand harvested from old, broad-leafed tea tree varietals unknown outside the region. When infusing this Dian Hong notice the thick large leaves, they will remain intact demonstrating the care in which this tea leaf was harvested and then twisted. Expect a creamy, sweet-liquoring tea with almost no bite.
Golden Halo is an exceptional example of the Dian Hong style. It is 100% gold tipped tea buds which were painstakingly hand sorted from the best of the Yunnan tea harvest Their golden color indicates that the buds were harvested just at the right time, right before the buds open into tea leaves. The large sized, gold-tipped tea leaves give some suggestion to just how special Golden Halo is and the aroma released when infused will confirm it's high ranking. This tea can be described as the "Mocha of Tea," offering a rich flavored liquor with sweet notes of honey then a smooth, creamy finish in the mouth.

Anyone who has asked me for tea recommendations in the store within the last 10 years probably has notice my preference for handcrafted, Chinese teas. The cultural significance of tea and the craft that has been perpetuated by generation after generation can be tasted in each cup. Glitter Saddles for 2010

Personally I'm always excited to start a New Year. Sure, I had some great experiences and travels in 2009 but I also made some mistakes and find that January 1st is my chance to make good and try to do better.
The Good List for 2009 includes two fantastic trips I made with my husband to Europe. Growing up in rural America I always dreamed of traveling throughout Europe and my husband has made this dream come true. On our trips we took our bicycles with us and just enjoyed each other's company and the scenery laid out before us.
The Need to Improve List for 2010 includes organizing my time. It's normal for Ethan and me to work 60 hours a week at our store but often I can be found working even up to 80 hours a week. As a retail store owner there is always something to do, but I hope to balance my work schedule with my family time better.
FYI we will be closed for New Years as I plan on having a few Ciders at the pub tonight.

Nilgir Tea, Koradundah Estate

This week we have introduced an organic orthodox leaf (whole leaf) of Nilgiri, a tea growing region of Southern India. It is fairly unusual to come across single estate, orthodox tea leaf from Nilgiri because over fifty percent of their tea leaf is Cut Tear Curl leaf (CTC) and then used in teabag blends. The Nilgiri Planters Association works with their member tea gardens and factories in order to maintain a high quality product while following conscientious social and environmental practices. Growers and producers are being encouraged to bring new types of fancy, single estate teas to the growing specialty tea market.
Nilgiri teas exhibit body and finesse without tannins or astringency in the cup. The Korakundah Estate tea leaf offers a full body with a slight lemony aroma, and a crisp finish. Can be enjoyed with or without milk.

Caffeine, Tea, and Musings

With the temperatures dropping ever so gradually we have been stocking our tea shelves vigorously. The most frequently asked question I receive daily is regarding the caffeine content of tea leaf.
I am going to review an article I wrote for out Tea-of-the-Month Club members earlier this year:
  Different types of tea contain varying amounts of caffeine. Typically an oxidized tea, or black tea, is considered to be more caffeinated than other categories of tea leaf. But many factors play into each batch of tea's caffeine content ranging from it's growing conditions, geographical location, harvest techniques, and processing. These variables may explain why a certain batch of tea has a noticeable kick to it. Generally (but not always) the lighter the tea is the less caffeine it contains therefore:
   White tea has less than Green
   Green tea has less than Oolong
   Oolong tea has less than black and
   Black tea has 1/3 of the amount than a cup of coffee.
   Tea leaves contain more than 500 compounds, this complex beverage is absorbed by the human body very differently than a cup of coffee. It takes the body 20 minutes to feel the caffeine boost from a cup of tea whereas the caffeine from coffee instantly hits the bloodstream. The slower effect tea has on the body is gentler and healthier than other highly caffeinated beverages.
  Interestingly brewing technique greatly affects the amount of caffeine in the tea liquor. When tea leaves are steeped longer than 5 minutes there may be a reduction in the stimulating effect of the brewed tea. The long steeping time allows the tea leaf to release more soluble solids into the brewed liquor than it does for a short steeping time. These soluble solids act as calmatives by binding to caffeine and preventing caffeine absorption by the body. Whereas a quick infusion can prove to have extra caffeine because caffeine is extracted quicker than the soluble solids.

After joy riding for 2 weeks in Southwestern France and Catalonia it's surprisingly good to be home as I started missing some of the great aspects of riding here in the US of A.

First of all Denverites have really taken to commuting by bicycles, not so in the rural areas of France and Spain. Within the areas we were touring Peter and I were often the only cyclists on the rode, save for an old Frenchman riding with his dog into town for his bread in the morning. The Europeans love their cars, they love to drive and to drive fast! But the motorists always give bicyclists the right-of-way. Not once did we get buzzed by a vehicle.

Our selection of bicycle shops, bicycle frames, and accessories is awesome in Denver beating out the tired old Decathalon bikes that frequent the French roadways. If one were to judge their city by the number of neighborhood bicycle shops open, Denver would be a winner.

Where are the women riders in Europe? We saw a total of two women bicyclists in France and none in Spain during our 2 week holiday.

What I miss already:

Bicyclists have rights in Europe, Cars and Pedestrians give bicyclists the right-of-way throughout France and Catalonia. (This attitude makes common sense since a takes a bicyclist a lot more energy to stop-and-go than a pedestrian.)

We had a wonderful time cycling through medieval villages of the Pyrennes and it's good to be home again.

Bicycle Meditation

Meditation is often recommended as a healthful lifestyle choice, aiding with emotional health and stress control. We hear about sitting meditation, walking meditation, yoga meditation, dance meditation but what about Bicycling Meditation!

What better way to experience your daily environment than by cycling? I find a comforting rythym in spinning those cranks daily to and from work. First I check to make sure my tire pressure is correct before each ride and I will occasionally check my chain to see if it needs lube or cleaned from excess grit. Then I slip onto the saddle, check for traffic and am off to my destination. I enjoy the smooth sound of the derrailleur responding to my gear choices, my legs punching up hills, then relishing the easy speed of the downhill turns. Along the way I watch the road for debris and potholes, I constantly observe the motorized vehicles around me. In my meditation I am listening to the bicycle and how it responds to me. Are my shoulders back, my stomach in, am I inhaling and exhaling efficiently, are my legs making circles as I turn the cranks? Then suddenly on the way home at night I realize summer is closing in because there is a chorus of crickets announcing the hour, the sun has dipped to the horizon, and I smell dinner from different houses on each block. Self observation, community observation, and world observation all from the saddle of my bicycle.

Note: bicycling meditation is a lot easier if your bicycle is properly tuned and you are prepared to fix an unexpected flat, please carry a pump, patch kit, and tire levers.

Flat Repair

Denver is a great city offering ethnic diversity, personable neighborhoods, great climate and blue skies. Unfortunately our climate grows an obscene amount of weeds that produce thorns. These amazing little thorns puncture bicycle and stroller tires at will creating headaches for all cyclists.

Ethan & I gladly repair flats from the store but we would like to offer a little advice to help avoid thorn related flats.

1. Good Tires, we offer different tires for different riding needs but tires with good rubber compound and/or thorn protection will especially help resist flats we recommend:

2. True Goo a non-toxic liquid sealant made in Longmont Colorado where they know a few things about thorns. Ethan has worked with all of the different types of liquid sealants in his career and really stands behind the effectiveness of the True Goo brand, .http://truegoo.com/. We both have used the product for years and after commuting through Commerce City, Golden, Englewood, and beyond I believe our bicycles are good test models for this product. We simply squirt the sealant in your bicycle or stroller innertubes and your good to go.

3. Tire Liners a thick piece of plastic that is placed between the tire and the innertube in order to physically repel thorns. Especially popular with trail riders & mt. bikers.

All of these products will help prevent flats and can be used separately or together. I use good tires and True Goo skipping the tire liners.

But the most important prevention is to watch the road in order to avoid debris. Do not ride in the gutter because the thorns collect there, ride with traffic that is where bikes belong anyway.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood get out there and ride Ethan & I will be in from 12-5 today if anyone needs a flat repaired.

Ethan and I want to sell more refurbished bicycles as we have time to build them out, but if you have your own frame or an older bicycle that can be upgraded or refurbished Ethan is definately the mechanic to speak with. Black Tea

Green tea or Black tea; Oolong or Pu-erh; Herbal or White, which one to choose?

Whichever one you enjoy the most. I always encourage customers to let their palette guide their tea purchases. Don't feel bullied to buy a certain type of tea just because it is suppose to offer outstanding health properties, if you don't enjoy it you probably won't drink it and then where will the health benefit be?

This week I will be featuring black tea leaf in the store and want to remind everyone that while black tea offers antioxidants it is extremely beneficial to the heart. After consuming a cup of black tea blood rushes through your blood vessels helping to dissuade plaque from forming in your arteries. This is quite a rush to the vascular system that only black tea will provide.

Indian Frost Tea

Although RC Cola is the traditional accompaniment for Moonpies I find that a nice cup of Indian Tea does nicely with this gooey soft treat.

My recommendation is for the unusual Southern Indian tea, Frost Tea, which has recently been added to our tea menu. This loose leaf tea is rich with a slightly malty-sweet flavor that can be enjoyed plain. The satisfying character of this tea is attributed to it's unique harvest and oxidation methods. The tea leaf is hand harvested very early in the Spring when there is a real threat of frost. These environmental conditions directly effect the character of the tea leaf. For some reason the Indian Teas have a certain affinity for sweets. Hope you can take a break and try this combination of tea and moonpies soon.

Ethan's Bicycle repair season has definitely begun this month. Tune-ups are only 2 days out and minor adjustments or tire repairs are done same day. Commuter bicycles are always given priority.

Something is in the air as custom wheels have been leaving the store left and right. Ethan has been building custom wheels since his days as a mechanic at Maxium Bicycles in the early 1990's. Why custom? Ethan can style a pair of wheels to your personal taste, your bicycle riding style, and your frame type. He is able and willing to build up any type of bicycle wheel you might want but his recommendation will be for a wheel that will ride smooth and outlive any pre-built model.

New inventory includes some awesome bicycle bells made in Japan and several new NITTO handlebar styles. Ever had NITTO bars? They are light yet strong, comfortable, and ever so stylish. Ethan always seems to talk me into a set of NITTOs and a new Brooks saddle for any new bike I acquire. Come on in and check them out.

As most of our customers and friends know, Ethan and I are avid bicycling commuters. Since I purchased my xtracycle (bicycle frame attachment) in 2003 I rarely drive and feel better for it. So for Spring 2009 we have been stocking the store with bicycle baskets, carriers, racks, and even xtracycles. Check it out, Ethan's always available to help fit the right basket to your bike frame.

Since Ethan opened his bicycle repair facility in June 2008 he has been conscientious about keeping his labor costs affordable for one primary reason, so that the Highland Neighborhood residents have a bike mechanic they can depend upon. pu-erh tea of the hour

Pu-erh is an aged, fermented, Chinese tea that offers unique health benefits. Traditionally pu-erh is considered a warming tea. It is often served after heavy meals to dispel fats and toxins from the body. Pu-erh lowers alcohol levels in the bloodstream. Because of the process in which pu-erh is made it is virtually caffeine-free. A perfect beverage for January, after the indulgent holiday season.

The pu-erh teas we offer at Urbanistic are from Yunnan, China, home to the oldest tea culture in the world. The citizens of this region are of ancient Tibeto-Burman origin and are known as the "pu" ethnic group. The pu-erh tea of today is the closest relation to the ancient teas produced in Yunnan some 2000 years ago. Tea production is a sacred, social tradition that still thrives in the remote villages of Southwestern Yunnan. Pu-erh production is a complex, multi-stepped process that can take 90 days to complete beginning with the tea leaf harvest. Special pu-erh tea leaves are plucked from special varieties of tea trees that can be well over 100 years old. After harvest the leaves are carefully fermented, compressed, and dried by skillful tea masters.

As in any other tea category, pu-erh teas vary greatly in flavor but they typically have a strong flavored liquor. Pu-erh tea does not become bitter, the flavor will become strong and earthy if infused for a long period of time, so prepare it to your taste. We like a shorter infusions in order to appreciated the delicate nuances of the tea.

Tea for Autumn

Often when the 4 o'clock hour rolls around and there are still 3 more work hours and 2 more bicycle tune-ups to complete a cup of tea offers one sanity. Darjeeling, a typical late afternoon offering, is a nuanced, lightly floral tea. The Autumnal flushes (see below) are richly flavored with a lightness in the finish, serve with a treacle tart and the afternoon is suddenly brighter.

Darjeeling

The temperate foothills of the Indian Himalayas are home to one of the world's most distinctive beverages, Darjeeling tea. The lush, green mountains were discovered by the English colonists in the 1800's as a cool respite from the unbearably hot Indian summers. Families would pack their households up for the season to vacation in the Darjeeling region. Quickly English experiments in planting Chinese tea bushes developed into a profitable Darjeeling trade.

Darjeeling only represents 1% of India's total tea production. But what the region lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Because of Darjeeling's unique environmental circumstances the tea of the region is known for it's delicate, nuanced flavor profiles. Find Darjeeling tea is sold by the estate and then by the flush. There are 87 tea estates in Darjeeling, each with a slightly unique micro-culture which will greatly affect the quality and the flavor of it's tea crops. Each estate has 3 flushes; the Spring plucking, the 2nd Summer harvest, and the Autumnal flush.

Margaret's Hope Autumnal Flush: Black Tea

The famed Margaret's Hope Estate offers atypical Autumnal Flush. Richer than the earlier harvests with distinctive floral-like notes.

Measure a teaspoon of tea per 6 oz cup and infuse with water just coming to a boil for 2-3 minutes. This delicate black tea is lovely straight up. Lesser grades of Darjeeling can be served with lemon and/or sugar cubes. A nice afternoon offering with a pot of Darjeeling could be fresh fruit, shortbread cookies, or treacle tarts. We just received a batch of treacle tarts in from England and highly recommend them with any black tea.

September, a transitional month into cool mornings and early sunsets, when once again the warming aroma of chai tea tastes just right.

Chai Tea, a milky spicy tea blend, can encompass many interpretations. The most satisfying, steamy mug of chai is made at home by simmering milk, water, tea leaf, and spices gently on the stove-top into a spicy goodness. I prefer equal amounts of whole milk to water, some prefer milk substitutes such as soy or rice milk, then I recommend 2 parts soy milk to 1 part water.

For example:

Measure 8 oz whole milk, 8 oz water, 1 TB chai tea blend into saucepan

Bring to simmer

Simmer gently for 5 minutes

Remove from heat and cover for 5 minutes

Sweeten to taste and strain into mugs.

Kashmiri Blend: green tea blended with sweet aromatic spices including vanilla, cardamom, almond, and clove.

Black Tea Blend: Sri Lankan black tea blended with hot spices like pepper, ginger, orange peel, cinnamon, and coriander.

Red Chai Blend: a Rooibos herb base which is naturally caffeine free.

Red-Chocolate Chai: another rooibos herb chai that is a great dessert tea choice.

For a short time we are offering a Chocolate Chai blend with a black tea base. And we are experimenting with a yerba mate chai blend. Come by the store to take a sample home to try. Nothing beats a mug of spicy chai before an early morning ride.
